Softball Opens on Winning Note

Cartersville, GA – Coach Monica Mills stated that she was looking forward to this upcoming season.  After today, she must be at least encouraged by the performance of her young squad after opening the campaign by going 2-1 Saturday in the Georgia Highlands College Border Battle played in Cartersville.

In the opener against Harford College out of Maryland, Kati Mills (Douglasville – South Paulding) got it done at the plate and on the mound.  The freshman had a bases-clearing double in the top of the 1st to give the Knights a 3-0 lead.  She also picked up the win, pitching 3.1 innings, allowing 2 runs and 5 hits while striking out 3 in a game which the WGTC cruised to an 11-2 run-rule shortened game.  Mills finished 2 for 3 at the plate with 3 RBI and a run scored.  Sophomore Maddie Reid (Woodstock – Woodstock) went 3 for 3 with 3 runs scored.  Another freshman, Lindsay Thomas (Stockbridge – Woodland) had an impressive opener as she was 3 for 4 from the plate with a double, RBI, and a run scored.

In the second game of the Battle, the Knights squared off with Cleveland State (TN).  Again WGTC started quickly, plating runs in the first 3 innings.  However, after the 4th, the Knights found themselves down 4-3.  However, in the 5th WGTC took advantage of some pitching and fielding miscues by the Cougars, crossing the plate 7 times and held on to win 10-8.  Another freshman, Taylor Knight (Carrollton – Mt. Zion) had a big offensive game, going 2 for 4 with 2 doubles and 4 RBI.  Sophomore Sarah Henderson (Warner Robins – Houston Co.) got the win in relief.

Playing in a later game on Saturday, the Knights fell behind a very good Calhoun Community College (AL) team early and lost 15-0.  Despite the loss in the third game, it was good to see several freshmen contributing in big ways.  After winning just 6 games a year ago, Saturday appears to be a spring board to what Coach Mills predicted will be an exciting season. Next up, on Friday, February the Knights will travel to Gainesville and face the junior varsity squad of Brenau University.  The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 1 pm.  The following Sunday, the club will travel to Atlanta to face Agnes Scott for a 12 pm doubleheader.
