Carrollton, GA – It had been a tough day for designated hitter Bailey Robinson. She had grounded out twice and lined-out to left field. In two of those at bats she had left runners in scoring position when making the last out of the inning. She came to bat in the bottom of the 7th with the bases loaded, 1 out, and the game tied 3-3. The freshman soon found herself down 1-2 before working the count full. But the frustrations of the earlier at bats were forgotten when she lined the next pitch over the center field fence. The walk-off grand slam gave the Golden Knights its first GCAA win 7-3 over Gordon here Wednesday.
Coach Monica Mills took away several positives. The opener had started like so many recent games for WGTC. After four innings, the Knights found themselves down 3-0. In the bottom of the 5th, Alexandra Yarnall gave her team a boost with a 2-run shot to left, scoring Kailen Greer who had earlier singled. Then to lead off the 6th, Baylee Blaylock led off with a pinch-hit blast to left knotting the game 3-3.
In the 7th, Yarnall led off with a bunt single. Avian Craft then beat out another bunt to give the Knights runners at 1st and 2nd. Chancey Davis is called on to bunt and reached on an error to load the bases. Lindsey Touchstone grounded into a fielder's choice to short as Yarnall was cut down at the plate, bringing Robinson to the plate for the decisive swing.
Hannah Hennessy (4-7) picked up the complete game win, allowing 3 runs while striking out 2. Yarnall was 2 for 3 with a HR and 2 RBI.
Game 2 was not nearly as dramatic. Gordon took a 9-2 lead after three innings and cruised to an 11-2 win. Craft had a 2-run blast in the 3rd, driving in Yarnall who had reached on a bunt single.
The Knights improve to 6-22 and 1-15 in GCAA play. They will travel to league-leader Georgia Military for a Friday doubleheader. First pitch is set for 4 pm.
