Pinehurst, NC - Prince George's (MD) broke open a close game and pulled away for an 88-76 win over the Knights in the opener of the NJCAA District VII Playoffs here Friday afternoon. The Owls (22-5) will now face host Sandhills Community College who defeated Anne Arundel (MD) in the other semifinal contest with the winner advancing to the National Tournament. WGTC's season comes to an end at 15-10.
The two teams went back and forth in the first half, with Prince George's going into the break with a slim 37-35 lead. The Owls were able to pull ahead after the break and held on for the victory. The Knights were led by Kameron Hickey's (Acworth-Etowah) 21 points. Jalen Leonard (Manchester-Manchester) contributed 15 points while Juwan Johnson (Covington-Newton) added 14. Bevon Wray (Atlanta-Union Grove) closed out the double-figure scorers with 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
The Knights had a successful season, clinching their 5th Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA) Championship. With the December announcement that WGTC will be ending its athletic programs at the end of this academic year, today's game was the final one for the program. While the loss to Prince George's was not the result that Coach Niki Okolovitch and his players wanted, they still walk away as GCAA Champions.
