Carrollton, GA – The Golden Knights Men's Basketball Team has a chance to claim another Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA) Division III Championship when Oxford College of Emory University visits Carrollton Wednesday night.
This season, West Georgia Tech and Emory-Oxford are the only teams competing in the GCAA Division III. The two teams are playing 3 games this year, with the series winner being declared the champion and advancing to the NJCAA District Championships. In the first matchup on January 26, the Knights escaped Oxford with an 81-79 victory when freshman Tyler Glover (Covington – Newton High) converted 2 free throws with 3.5 seconds to play. The two teams are scheduled to play again on February 23, but WGTC hopes that game will be rendered meaningless with a win on Wednesday.
It will not be easy. The Eagles (16-6) led much of the 1st half of the previous meeting and took a 42-36 lead into the break. The Knights were able to rally and take a lead in the 2nd half, but Oxford battled back, tying the game at 79 with 12 seconds to play. The Eagles average 83.5 points and have 4 players averaging in double figures, led by JJ Halaby. The freshman out of Baltimore, MD is averaging 25 points which is 5th in the Nation, and posted a game high 29 in the first meeting between the teams.
Last week, the Knights (10-9) defeated the LaGrange College Junior Varsity 97-92 at home on Wednesday and fell on the road 70-58 to Division I Andrew College. Juwan Johnson (Covington – Newton High) and Kameron Hickey (Acworth – Etowah High) continue to lead the Knights with 12.6 and 12.4 ppg respectively. Bevon Wray (Atlanta – Union Grove) is averaging 10.1 points and a team high 7.5 rebounds.
WGTC last won the GCAA Division III championship in 2017. The Knights also claimed the Title in 2013 and 2014. Tip Wednesday is set for 7:30 at Oak Mountain Academy in Carrollton.
