Coach Niki Okolovitch's squad heads into 2019 hoping to build off the experience gained over the first half of the season. After opening the campaign winning 4 of the first 5 games, the Golden Knights have stumbled by losing 5 of its last 6 and head into the new year with a 5-6 record.
As is many times the case, records can be deceptive. The Knights, playing several freshmen, were competitive against Division I competition. In its last 5 matchups, WGTC had leads in each game, losing an overtime road contest at Central Georgia Tech, a home game against Southern Crescent, and another road match at Southern Union each by single digits. The Knights won on the road at Georgia Northwestern Tech before dropping the 2018 finale at home against Bevill State 82-80.
Several players are contributing major minutes. Kameron Hickey, a 6-5 sophomore guard from Acworth, leads the team with 12.5 ppg. Right behind him is freshman guard Juwan Johnson. The Covington native is adding 11.4 ppg. Forward Bevon Wray leads the team with 7.1 rebounds per game. The 6-5 freshman from Union Grove High is also averaging 9.2 ppg.
The new year tips for the Knights Tuesday, January 8 with a road contest against the junior varsity of LaGrange College. On Sunday, WGTC will travel to Franklin Springs to face the junior varsity of Emmanuel College. The Knights return home on Thursday, January 17 when they face Middle Georgia Prep. Tip is scheduled at 7 pm at Oak Mountain Academy in Carrollton.
