Carrollton, GA – Saturday marked a busy day for West Georgia Tech athletics with all four teams in action. At Oak Mountain Academy, Homecoming festivities were in full swing as the WGTC women's basketball team squared off with Wallace State-Hanceville and the men facing Georgia Gwinnett College.
In the women's game, the Golden Knights ran into a buzz saw in Wallace State, one of the top Division I programs in Alabama. The Lions sprinted out to a 49-13 lead after the opening half and cruised to a 97-27 win. Coach Alford Williams' team had its 4-game winning streak snapped and drops to 6-13 on the season, while Wallace State improves to 20-7. The Knights can clinch the GCAA Championship Monday night with a win against Southern Crescent. Tip is scheduled for 5:30 at Oak Mountain Academy.
A club team from Georgia Gwinnett College was the opponent for the WGTC men's basketball team. The Golden Knights trailed 43-38 at the break, but an 18-8 run over the first 6 minutes of the 2nd half put WGTC ahead 56-51. The Grizzlies battled back to tie the game at 60-60 at the 10:25 mark. With 5 minutes to play, the visitors went on an 8-0 run to take a 74-66 lead and the Knights could not respond falling 78-71. Joe Boyer's 23 points and 16 rebounds paced the Knights.
Coach Niki Okolovitch's team (8-12) will not have too much time to rest as Southern Crescent comes to town Monday for a key GCAA contest. The Tigers defeated WGTC earlier this year 75-70 and is atop the league standings at 3-0. The Knights enter with a 2-1 conference mark and hoping to create a tie for first heading to the tournament next weekend. The men's game is scheduled for 7:30 pm at Oak Mountain.
