Niceville, FL – The West Georgia Tech Baseball Team opened the 2019 campaign here with a 3-game series against Northwest Florida State.
In Friday's doubleheader opener, fans were treated to an old-fashioned pitcher's duel. Malcolm Falardeau's solo shot in the 5th gave WGTC the lead while a trio of freshmen, Corbit Cimadevilla, Isaac Miller, and Matt Terill combined for a 3-hit shutout as the Knights held on for a 1-0 victory. Right-hander Cimadevilla (Newnan – Northgate) started and went 2 innings before giving way to left-hander Miller (Powder Springs – Harrison) who earned the win by pitching 4 innings and allowing just 2 hits with a strikeout. Terrill (Acworth – North Cobb) closed the door in the 7th to record the save.
The nightcap didn't go as well. Sophomore Justin Guyton (Acworth – Allatoona) broke up the Raider no-hitter with a single in the 6th for the lone WGTC hit. The Knights gave up 7 runs, 2 of which were earned and dropped Game 2 by a 7-0 margin. In Saturday's single game, the Raiders broke open a close game with 9 runs in the 6th inning followed by 6 in the 7th and cruised to a 17-0 win. Sophomore Jacob Warren (Powder Springs – Hillgrove) recorded the only 2 hits for the Knights.
Coach Beau Welborn's club will return to action on Monday when they travel to LaGrange College to face the Panther junior-varsity squad. First pitch of the scheduled doubleheader will take place at 5 pm. On Thursday, the Knights will travel to Chattanooga State for a 1 pm doubleheader. The home opener for the 2019 season is set for Saturday at 1 pm when Vincennes comes to town. Home games are played at Central High School in Carrollton.
