Carrollton, GA – The Golden Knights baseball team erupted for 6 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning and then held on to defeat Georgia Highlands 8-5 Wednesday at Central High School.
Trailing 3-2 entering the home half of the 7th, Justin Jackson got the rally started with a single to center. Adrian Martinez was able to reach on an error by the pitcher with Jackson advancing to 3rd. Justin Guyton singled in Jackson to knot the game 3-3. With a little help from the Chargers, the Knights were not done. After Guyton stole second, Brock Maxwell is walked to load the bases. Both Jacob Warren and Tony Matos were hit by a pitch, each bringing in runs. Jacob Earley drove in Maxwell on a sacrifice fly to left. Warren scored on a wild pitch and Danny Vargas singled in Matos. When the dust settled, it was 8-3 Knights.
Georgia Highlands added 2 runs in the bottom of the 8th for the final margin. Avery Smith started, allowing 3 runs, 2 earned, on 4 hits and 4 strikeouts. His brother, Austin Smith (3-1) earned the win in relief allowing 2 runs on 2 hits over the remaining 4 innings. Offensively, Justin Guyton was 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored and an RBI. Jacob Warren was 1 for 3 with 2 RBI.
The Knights improve to 14-21, 5-10 in GCAA play. They will travel to Cuthbert to face Andrew College Thursday at 2 pm in a game originally scheduled for Friday.
