Knights Blank Central Alabama

Knights Blank Central Alabama

Carrollton, GA – If you love pitching, then you would have loved the doubleheader match-up between West Georgia Tech and Central Alabama Community College.  The clubs combined for 4 runs and 11 hits in two 7 inning games which took just 3 and a half hours to play.  The Golden Knights avenged last week's season opening sweep at the hands of the Trojans, blanking the visitors by scores of 1-0 and 3-0.

In Game 1, WGTC scratched out that single run with 2 outs in the 1st when sophomore Tony Matos (Winder-Winder-Barrow) reached on an error. He then stole 2nd and scored on a single to left by sophomore Jacob Earley (Douglasville-Alexander.) Cullen Monette (Alpharetta-King's Ridge) and Jalan Daniels (Stone Mountain-Redan) made that run stand-up.  Monette scattered 3 hits over 5 innings to earn the win. The sophomore right-hander threw just 54 pitches, had 2 strikeouts and no walks.  Daniels, a freshman right-hander, picked up the save, throwing the final 2 innings and not allowing a hit.

In Game 2, neither team had a runner advance past 2nd through the first 5 innings.  Finally, WGTC broke through in the bottom of the 6th. Adrian Martinez (So., Snellville-South Gwinnett) led off with a single to center. Justin Guyton (Fr., Acworth-Allatoona) followed up with a single to left.  Matos then drew a walk to load the bases with no outs.  Earley steps to the plate and grounds to first, but the Trojans force Martinez at home, leaving the bases loaded with 1 out. Guyton scored on a wild pitch to give the Knights a 1-0 lead. Another wild pitch plated Matos. Danny Vargas (So., Long Island, NY-Dutchtown High) drove in Earley with a sacrifice fly to center, pushing the lead to 3-0.

As it turned out, all freshman Aubrey Davis (Danielsville-Madison Co.) needed was one run. The left-hander allowed just 2 hits, striking out 6 with one walk to get the complete game shutout.

The sweep evens the Knights' record to 3-3 on the young season.  Coach Beau Welborn's team hits the road Thursday when they travel to perennial power Southern Union. First pitch is scheduled for 1:30 pm.
