Carrollton, GA – The Golden Knights opened the home portion of the 2018 campaign with a doubleheader against Vincennes University. The Trailblazers have travelled south from Indiana to kick off their 2018 season.
Game 1 started well for the home team. The Knights led 2-0 through 4 innings and then 5-1 after 5 before Vincennes struck for 4 runs in the top of the 6th to tie the score 5-5. In the bottom of the 7th, WGTC loaded the bases with 1 out, but the Trailblazer's wiggled out of the jam to force extra innings. In the bottom of the 9th, Adrian Martinez (So., Snellville-South Gwinnett) and Chandler Hilton (So., Powder Springs-Hillgrove) draw lead-off walks. Tony Matos (So., Winder-Winder Barrow) draws a single off a bunt to load the bases, bringing up Jacob Warren. The Powder Springs freshman singled past third to drive in the winning run.
Avery Smith (So., Ball Ground-Creekview) started on the bump for the Knights. He allowed 5 runs while striking out 9 through 5.2 innings. His brother, Austin Smith (So., Ball Ground-Creekview), picked up the win in relief.
Game 2 also had its share of late inning fireworks, but this one did not go the way of the Knights. WGTC scored 2 runs in the 2nd inning and added another in the 6th to take a 3-0 lead heading into the final frame. The Trailblazers erupted for 6 runs in their half of the 7th. But to their credit, Coach Beau Welborn's squad responded with 3 runs to tie the game at 6 and force extra innings. The Trailblazers broke through in the 9th with 3 and then held WGTC to take the victory 9-6.
The Knights are 1-3 on the young season, losing 2 of the three games in extra innings. They will return to action with a home doubleheader Tuesday, March 6 against Central Alabama Community College. The first pitch is scheduled for 2 pm.
