Carrollton, GA – The calendar has turned to May and the WGTC Baseball Team is still playing meaningful games. The Knights find themselves with a chance to make the GCAA Tournament. With 2 games to play, the scenario cannot be tighter - or more confusing.
We will start with what we know. The top 4 teams advance to the post-season tournament. The top 3 teams are already determined: #1 Gordon (24-4) #2 East Georgia (19-9), and #3 Georgia Highlands (15-14). As of May 1, there are 3 teams which are tied for the final spot: Andrew (11-17), South Georgia (11-17), and WGTC (11-17.) Each of these teams has 2 games left:
- Andrew hosts South Georgia (Thursday) and hosts Georgia Highlands (Saturday)
- South Georgia travels to Andrew (Thursday) and hosts Gordon (Saturday)
- WGTC hosts Gordon (Thursday – 2 pm) and travels to East Georgia (Saturday – 3 pm)
The only head-to-head contest between these 3 teams is Andrew and South Georgia on Thursday giving one of those teams 12 wins. As a result, WGTC will need to win one of its last two games to have a chance.
The Knights face a tall order. Gordon (45-7, 24-4) moved up to #3 in the National Rankings and has beaten WGTC in its 4 previous meetings this year: April 2 (12-1), April 4 (11-1), April 6 (5-4 and 5-0). In the 5-4 loss, the Knights took a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the 6th before Gordon struck for 4 runs and held onto the win. Against East Georgia (32-15, 19-9), the league's 2nd place team, the Knights are 1-3, losing in Swainsboro April 11 (6-1), winning in Carrollton (10-0) April 12th, and dropping both ends of the doubleheader April 13 (10-3 and 3-0).
To summarize, regardless of what happens on Thursday, the final spot will not be decided until late Saturday afternoon. The only certainty at this point, is that the Knights must win one of its final 2 games to have a chance. The playoff picture will clear only slightly after Thursday's games ... we will revisit where we are on Friday!
