The Knights' Round Table (4-1-2019)

Baseball Returns to Action

It is rare to go 10 days between games, but with last Monday's rain out against Wallace-Dothan that is exactly was Beau Welborn's club has done.  However, that break is about to end in a big way as the Knights are set to take on 9th-ranked Gordon College.  The Highlanders (26-7, 9-4) will travel to Carrollton for the opener Tuesday at 2 pm.  The series then shifts to Barnesville for Thursday's single game at 2 pm followed by a Saturday doubleheader at 12 pm.

Several players are having great seasons so far and it is reflected in the latest GCAA statistics. Freshman Malcolm Falardeau (Fayetteville – Whitewater) sits atop the league leaders in homeruns with 7 on the season. The outfielder is 3rd on the team with a .277 batting average and a team-high 21 RBI. Right behind Falardeau is sophomore 3B Joey DeMasi with 6 homeruns, tied for 2nd in the league. The Allatoona High product's 15 RBI is 2nd on the team. Khaalis King (Atlanta – Lakeside) is tied for 2nd in the GCAA with 19 stolen bases.  The shortstop is 4th on the team with a .274 batting average.   Leading the Knights at the plate is 2B Justin Guyton (Acworth – Allatoona) with a .313 batting average. The sophomore also leads the team with 3 triples and is second on the team with 12 stolen bases.

On the mound, freshman right-hander Dalton Halyard (Acworth – Allatoona) leads the team with 11 appearances and has posted a 2-0 record with 3 saves.  He along with freshman Matt Terrill's (Acworth – North Cobb) 3 saves are tied for 5th in the GCAA. Freshman left-hander Isaac Miller (Powder Springs – Harrison) leads the Knights with 3-2 record through 6 starts.  Miller has posted a 3.44 ERA through 34 innings of work.

The next two weeks are important for the Knights (14-16, 5-8) who are battling for a berth in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA) Tournament.  After this week's series with Gordon, the Knights will face East Georgia, who is currently tied with Gordon in the league's top spot. Softball Battling for GCAA Spot

Last week the Knights stepped out of GCAA play with the junior varsity squads from LaGrange College and Brenau University.  On Tuesday, LaGrange came to town and the Knights took the opener 6-5, and fell in the nightcap 8-1.  WGTC then played host to Brenau, sweeping the Tigers 6-5 and 8-1.

Coach Monica Mills' team will return to action this upcoming weekend for a couple of key GCAA contests.  The Knights, who are putting together one of the top seasons in school history, are currently 15-16, 5-7 in GCAA play and are battling for a berth in the GCAA tournament.  This weekend will be big for the Knights as they host East Georgia Saturday in a 2 pm doubleheader followed by South Georgia on Sunday at 12 pm.  WGTC is currently 5th in the league.  Complete league standings are listed below:
