Basketball Tops Emory-Oxford ... Preps for NJCAA District VII Tournament
It is hard to beat a good team twice and even more difficult to beat that team three times. But that is exactly what the Knights were able to accomplish Saturday night in Oxford when they faced Emory-Oxford for the third time this season. The previous 2 meetings went down to the last seconds, with WGTC winning 81-79 on January 26 in Oxford and then again on February 6 in Carrollton 99-95 in overtime. The third meeting proved to be no different, with the Knights able to hang on 97-96. Freshman guard, Juwan Johnson (Covington – Newton), led the Knights with 29 points and Nick Parks (Newnan – Newnan) chipped in 18.
Now Coach Niki Okolovitch must turn his squad's attention to the post-season as the Knights will travel to the NJCAA District VII Tournament hosted by Sandhills College in Pinehurst, NC. The Knights (15-9), representing Region 17 (Georgia) faces 10th-ranked Prince George's Community College (21-5) out of Largo, MD, the Champion from Region 20. Game time is set for Friday at 4 pm. In the bracket's other game, Sandhills Community College the Champion of Region 10, will face Anne Arundel from Arnold, MD, the Region 20 Runner-up. The winners will face each other Saturday at 1 pm for the opportunity to play for the National Championship in Rochester, MN.
Baseball Splits Doubleheader
Rain continued to plague the Knights baseball team this week with several games cancelled. However, the weather broke on Sunday and Coach Beau Welborn was able to pick-up a series with Lincoln Trail Community College (IL) in Hoover, AL. In Sunday's doubleheader, the Knights took Game 1 by a 5-4 margin and dropped Game 2 7-1.
The two teams will square off again on Monday in Hoover in another doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 pm. Weather permitting, the Knights (8-5) have a busy week. On Tuesday, WGTC will travel to Southern Union for a 1:30 doubleheader. Wallace-Dothan will travel to Carrollton for a Thursday doubleheader set for 1 pm. The Knights open GCAA play with a single game at home Saturday at 5 pm against Abraham Baldwin.
Softball to Begin GCAA Play
The rain also has not been too kind to the Knights softball team. Off to a great 4-1 start, Coach Monica Mills hated losing 2 doubleheaders this week to rain, especially with the GCAA schedule getting underway.
WGTC jumps into conference play with two road doubleheaders this week. On Tuesday, the Knights travel to Douglas for a meeting with South Georgia. First pitch will take place at 2 pm. The club will stay on the road Wednesday for a 1 pm matchup at East Georgia in Swainsboro.
